sqsl Shuffler plays the audio files in a folder in random order. Choose a folder with audio samples, field recordings, loops or textures, and it keeps drawing from it. Each file plays to its end, then the next one starts.
It works as an AUv3 instrument in your host app (also standalone). Available for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
How it plays
- Every file plays once before the folder is reshuffled.
- Up to five playheads play files in parallel and overlap freely.
- Lowering the playhead count lets the current files finish; raising it starts new ones right away.
- Playback follows the host's transport: press play and new files start; stop and they stop.
Parameters
- PITCH: varispeed from two octaves down to one octave up (up only in memory mode).
- DENSITY: the chance that a file is heard. Files that miss play silently for their full length, leaving gaps that follow the material.
- REPEAT: the chance that the same file plays again right away.
- HEADS: how many files play at the same time, from 1 to 5.
- REVERSE: the chance that a file plays backwards (memory mode only).
Controls can be automated and MIDI-mapped in your host.
Load to memory or stream from disk
- Memory mode decodes files for instant starts, reverse playback and the full pitch range. Set a maximum file length (1, 3 or 10 minutes) to leave long files out. A readout shows how much memory is used on iPhone and iPad.
- Stream mode plays long recordings straight from disk with very little memory. Pitch then ranges from the original speed down to two octaves below.
Files and presets
- Reads WAV, AIFF, CAF, MP3, AAC/M4A, FLAC and more.
- Works with folders in Files, on external drives and in iCloud Drive.
- Presets store the folder, controls and the loading settings.
Standalone app
Plays right away without a transport and keeps playing in the background. Its presets are separate from the plugin's.
